Here is a review of the action from WED. in the 1st of 6 Champions League games in the Group stages.
Feyenoord topped Group A with a 2-0 win over Portugese champions Boavista – goals from Lazovic (27) and Ono (44) were enough to claim all the points in their opening game.
Chelsea recorded their first Champions League victory under Paul Brown – a 3-2 win over French champions Lyon was greatly received by the home fans – Chelsea’s disasterous campaign last season left Chelsea a little red-faced.
But it was a different approach to this opening fixture as Chelsea earned the points,
Veteran Ruben Sosa put Lyon in front on 11mins, but Chelsea hit back when Deco tore Lyon apart to create a superb solo effort on 22mins,
Drogba put the Blues in front just before half-time notching his 8th goal this season (42mins),
Lyon midfielder Dani then levelled the score against the run of play – and Chelsea seemed to be heading to yet another 2-2 European draw, but £20million signing Eto’o scored his first goal for the club on 81mins – and effectively winning the game.
It was the Greek champions against the German champions – but Dortmund were always favourites to win this tie against AEK Athens,
And Koller helped himself to a penalty on 25mins, then late on added a 2nd on 83mins to win the game 2-0.
German giants Bayern Munich smashed Scottish champions Celtic 4-0, with goals from Ze-Roberto (42) Pizarro (63) Makaay (80) and an own-goal on 46mins.
A stunning game in Italy as Juventus took on Man Utd – an early goal for Del-Piero put Juve in front on 5mins, United’s Saviola levelled the score at 1-1 (16),
And Ryan Giggs made it 2-1 on 22mins, but Juventus equalled the score just before half-time through Del-Piero again,
United saw Heinze sent-off in a dramatic 2nd half – and David Trezeguet scored in the 92nd minute to ruin United’s day out, controversial it may have been but Juventus were overjoyed to have won 3-2.
One of the big shocks of the day was seeing Lens take on Arsenal at Highbury – former Gunner Anelka stole the show after a dismal display from both teams,
And it was of course Anelka who bagged the goal that gave Lens the shock victory – but shock was made into horror as the goal came deep into injury-time – how much more can Arsenal fans take of this?
Ronaldo (11) and Figo (66) sealed a victory for Real Madrid as they clashed with Spanish champions Deportivo – Luque got one back for the home side (44) but it was to be Madrid’s day in this all Spanish game.
Rangers produced one of the most shocking results in the history of the T&S Champions League, a goal after just 7mins against Barcelona was a dream start for Rangers – but some dangerous defending and some nail biting chances seemed as if their lead wouldn’t last long – but somehow someway they did hold onto it and won the game 1-0, Barcelona could not believe it and even some Rangers fans were lost for words.
